Cape Town Greenpoint stadium demolition completed

18 April :Cape Town Greenpoint stadium demolition completed

Published: 17 Apr 07 - 15:03
The Cape Environmental Protection Association (CEPA) legal team on Tuesday agreed to drop its court application to stop the partial demolition of the existing stadium at Green Point after it discovered that the planned demolition had been completed.

City of Cape Town spokesperson Pieter Cronje said that the legal teams of the city and the Fifa organising committee had argued that the association should pay the cost of the two interdict applications.

“On the question of cost, judgement has been reserved and no date has yet been set,” he explained.

Cronje reiterated that construction on the new 68 000-seater stadium would progress to meet the deadline of 2009.

Although the demolition programme on the existing stadium had been fully completed, a portion of the grandstand had been retained as planned.

Currently on site excavation and service diversion, including storm water, water and electricity, was under way, in preparation for cement pouring on the foundation of the new stadium “sometime next week”.

No War, No Trident and No News (London anti-war protest, April 10th)

Hippy protest

Londoners are protesting again! (In case you don't know, there are protests in this city almost every day). Well, on April 10th it was a 'No War' and 'Stop Trident' protest in which the usual suspects participated (see photo for example). However, I found nothing about this on BBC. Nothing! Would you consider this a case of mass media neglect or the general politics of the country?

28 Weeks Later - how to promote a film :)

Impromptu Zombie stand-in

Do you know how to promote a new film?

Here's a story from NoComment News group on Flickr: "Following a series of spy-like anonymous tip-offs, I had a bit of an easter egg hunt around Dover and London to get shots of a few guys doing guerrilla-style projections to promote the new film, "28 Weeks Later". If it's anything like the first one, it'll rock! Yay!http://www.ragevirus.co.uk/ for more info! Leon Neal"

Easter Eggs

While Easter is over, we still have lots of Easter Eggs remaining in our fridges. How many Easter Eggs did you dye this weekend? 5? 10? 20? Then I have a question: what are you going to do with the leftovers? OK, I would suggest the following idea:
if some of your Easter Eggs are a piece of art, like the ones above, don't eat them before you take a picture of them! After you have submited the photos to NoComment News group on Flickr (with which we'll start a 'photo-collection' of Crafted Easter Eggs), feel free to get 10 recipies of what to do with leftover Easter eggs from Fabulous Food.
Do you have better ideas for leftover eggs? Please let me know in the comments.

Helvetica is 50 years old, New York exhibition

helvetica

Did you know that Helvetica font is 50 years old? 50 years - no more, no less!
New York is hosting a new exhibition dedicated to this great (or ordinary?) event. The event is great because Helvetica font is widely used everywhere - including on streetsigns. The event is also ordinary because everyone's used to Helvetica and would hardly even recognize it.
However, on April 6th the film "Helvetica" was shown to visitors of this exhibition. Those who failed to purchase the tickets (which were sold within 48 hours) stood in line for 1 hour, hoping to get in!
Michael Surtees, who posted the above photo to NoComment News group on Flickr, dicusses the film and the whole event in his blog
Have you happened to visit this exhibition? Please post your photos, designer folks outside NY would love to see them.

New York or Vancouver Auto Show? guess

They did it again! April's fools day

It seems like auto shows are always all the same when you see pictures of them. The photos are always great, sure! But you can never tell if it's a New York Auto Show which is going on today in New York or a Vancouver Auto Show that is also going on today in Vancouver. Which auto show do you think is ging on above? Hehe, the right answer is none :) This is a photo of an annual April Fools Day project by engineering students. Note that a car has a pillar going through it :)

Times Up! Art Exhibition, New York

Times Up! Art Exhibit

I saw this photo on NoComment News group this morning. The 'Times Up Art Exhibit on the West Side' urged me to google it and 851 000 000 results was the number of results I got:
TIME'S UP! is a New York City-based, not-for-profit, direct-action, environmental group that uses events and educational programs to promote a more sustainable, less toxic city. The latest event is the art exhibit, boasting environmentally-themed pieces from local artists, activists, and cyclists.
Well, if you are in New York, here's the address of where to go: Protest Space, 511 West 20th Street at 10th Ave.
Should you happen to take a photo there, don't hesitate to send it to NoComment. I‘m curious to find out what 'environmentally-themed pieces' means. And the exhibition dates are from March 24 to May 5, Thurs-Sat, Noon-6 pm.

anti-war protests, single-payer healthcare and too much crowded jails in France

I do not personally believe in lunar influence on people, but how would you explain a 'wave' of protests around the whole world at the end of March? The NoComment News group showed us some quite unusual protests around the world.

Everything started with the Antiwar protests; particularly a beach antiwar rally in Naples, Fl. is the most impressive

On the placards of other protesters you can read: "Single Payer HealthCare for all" in Manhattan

"Fair deal for cleaners" somewhere in the US

"Ringling Beats Animals" on Madison Sq. Garden (Ringling is a circus company)

There was also a protest against too many crowded jails in France and, below, Churchill House Protest in Great Britain

And who would expect that these constitute only 10% of the protests that occurred around the world in these few days?
