Parade Without a Permit, civil rights

On April 19th, The Radical Homosexual Agenda (RHA), with other civil rights interested groups,  holded a "Parade Without a Permit" at City Hall at 4 pm to protest the new NYPD parade permit rules. The Assemble For Rights NYC coalition stands in solidarity with RHA and these groups and joined them Thursday in their first amendment protected peaceful assembly.

Despite outcries from the public, numerous community groups, the NYC Bar Association, civil rights advocates, and members of City Council, Ray Kelly and the leadership at the New York Police Department have pushed ahead with new parade permit rules which will have a dramatic chilling effect on the exercise of our free speech rights. On Friday January 28th the NYPD promulgated new rules that require groups of 50 or more to obtain a permit if they want to gather on a sidewalk, in the road, or in the parks. The rules effect pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists alike. The NYPD can begin enforcing them starting February 25th. (http://www.assembleforrightsnyc.org/)

Boris Eltsin died, RIP

Boris Yeltsin, the first president of Russia, died on April 23, 2007. What are people saying about this sad event in Russia? As always happens to presidents, Yeltsin was forgotten shortly after he left office. Yesterday, people were calling and texting each other with the question „Did you know Yeltsin died?"
Russian TV showed many highlights of Yeltsin's life - even more than you might have seen while he was still alive. They say people will not fully understand and recognize his contribution to Russian and world history for many years.

American Idol in Jamaica

"Rising Stars is similar to American Idol in the US. This is one of the tryouts to for the next season of the show, which will be broadcast in summer 2007 in Jamaica. Between 300 and 400 contestants tried out on Saturday, April 21st. Those who did well enough were called back for a second round of evaluation on Sunday".

Cape Town Greenpoint stadium demolition completed

The Cape Environmental Protection Association (CEPA) legal team on Tuesday agreed to drop its court application to stop the partial demolition of the existing stadium at Green Point after it discovered that the planned demolition had been completed.

City of Cape Town spokesperson Pieter Cronje said that the legal teams of the city and the Fifa organising committee had argued that the association should pay the cost of the two interdict applications.

“On the question of cost, judgement has been reserved and no date has yet been set,” he explained.

Cronje reiterated that construction on the new 68 000-seater stadium would progress to meet the deadline of 2009.

Although the demolition programme on the existing stadium had been fully completed, a portion of the grandstand had been retained as planned.

Currently on site excavation and service diversion, including storm water, water and electricity, was under way, in preparation for cement pouring on the foundation of the new stadium “sometime next week”.

Tartan Parade, New York

What you see above is the 9th Annual New York Tartan Day Parade that happened on Saturday, April 14, 2007. This is one of the largest Scottish parades in the world and is included in a series of 10 great events known as Tartan Week in New York.
Here are some stats for you to have more details about the Tartan parade:
- tickets were sold at $25 each
- official count of registered participants: 1865 (acc. to the official site )
- 798 pipes and drums
- 20 clans were present

No War, No Trident and No News (London anti-war protest, April 10th)

Londoners are protesting again! (In case you don't know, there are protests in this city almost every day). Well, on April 10th it was a 'No War' and 'Stop Trident' protest in which the usual suspects participated (see photo for example). However, I found nothing about this on BBC. Nothing! Would you consider this a case of mass media neglect or the general politics of the country?

Easter Eggs

While Easter is over, we still have lots of Easter Eggs remaining in our fridges. How many Easter Eggs did you dye this weekend? 5? 10? 20? Then I have a question: what are you going to do with the leftovers? OK, I would suggest the following idea:
if some of your Easter Eggs are a piece of art, like the ones above, don't eat them before you take a picture of them! Helvetica is 50 years old, New York exhibition

Did you know that Helvetica font is 50 years old? 50 years - no more, no less!
New York is hosting a new exhibition dedicated to this great (or ordinary?) event. The event is great because Helvetica font is widely used everywhere - including on streetsigns. The event is also ordinary because everyone's used to Helvetica and would hardly even recognize it.
However, on April 6th the film "Helvetica" was shown to visitors of this exhibition. Those who failed to purchase the tickets (which were sold within 48 hours) stood in line for 1 hour, hoping to get in!
